Handyman in Roscoe, IL

Roscoe sits on the Rock River north of Machesney Park, about a twenty-minute drive from downtown Rockford and only a few miles from the Wisconsin line. Its history goes back to the 1830s, when William Talcott settled on the east side of the river across from Stephen Mack's trading post at Macktown. After the bridge washed out in 1851, much of Macktown moved over to Roscoe, and the railroad arrived a year later. For most of the next century it stayed a small farm village; as recently as 1970 only about a thousand people lived here. Then came the growth. Roscoe's population roughly tripled in the 1990s and kept climbing through the 2000s, to about 11,000 today. As a result, most Roscoe houses are relatively new: two-story colonials, ranches with bonus rooms and split-foyer homes in subdivisions laid out between the river, McCurry Road and the I-90 corridor, many built from the mid-1990s through the late 2000s. These homes have their own repair patterns. Builder-grade faucets, fixtures, door hardware and bath fans installed twenty or thirty years ago are wearing out on schedule, drywall nail pops and corner cracks show up as framing settles, and families want TVs mounted, smart devices installed and basements finished out.

Roscoe life centers on a few routes and landmarks. North Second Street, still Illinois 251, runs up through town; McCurry Road, Hononegah Road, Elevator Road and Rockton Road connect the subdivisions to I-90 and to neighboring Rockton; and the Rock River forms the western edge, with forest preserves and trails along its banks. Kinnikinnick Creek winds through the area on its way to the river, and the Kinnikinnick Creek Conservation Area is a favorite for walking and birding. Students attend Kinnikinnick District schools and then Hononegah High School, and on fall Friday nights a good share of the village seems to be at the game. The newer homes here sit on open lots where the wind has a long run off the surrounding fields, so siding, fences, gates and outdoor fixtures take more of a beating than they would in an older, tree-sheltered neighborhood, and drifting snow piles up along fences and garage doors every winter.

What Roscoe neighbors book most

Roscoe is a straight shot up North Second Street or the tollway for us, and we work in the newer subdivisions here often enough to know what usually needs attention.

Jobs we handle a lot around Roscoe

Roscoe jobs skew toward upgrades and wear items in newer houses. We mount TVs in family rooms and finished basements, install video doorbells, smart thermostats and smart switches, with our licensed electricians handling the wiring, assemble furniture and playsets, and hang shelving and closet systems. Drywall work is mostly nail pops, settling cracks at corners and above doors, and patches where a door handle or moving day did some damage. We replace builder-grade faucets, toilets and disposals, swap basic light fixtures for better ones and add ceiling fans to bedrooms and bonus rooms that get warm in July. Outside, it's fence boards and gates loosened by wind and frost, gutters that need cleaning and resealing at the seams, and pressure washing for siding, driveways and decks.

Questions we hear in Roscoe

My house was built around 2000. Why are so many things breaking at once?

It's a normal stage for homes of that age, not a sign that something is wrong. Builder-grade faucets, fill valves, disposals, bath fans and door hardware tend to last fifteen to twenty-five years, and in Roscoe a lot of houses were built within a few years of each other, so they're all hitting that point now. We can work through the list in one visit, replacing worn fixtures and parts, with our licensed plumbers and electricians handling the connections, and upgrading to better hardware where it makes sense.

Can you mount a TV above the fireplace in a newer home?

Usually, yes. Many Roscoe homes have gas fireplaces with a drywall chase above, and we confirm the framing, check the manufacturer's clearances for heat, and choose a mount that holds the TV at a comfortable angle. We run cables inside the wall using an in-wall kit rated for the purpose, and we'll recommend a pull-down mount if the screen would otherwise sit too high for comfortable viewing.

Can you set up a smart thermostat and video doorbell together?

Yes, and doing them in one visit saves time. We check whether your furnace has a common wire for the thermostat and add an adapter if needed, mount the doorbell and connect it to your existing transformer and chime, and get both on your Wi-Fi and phone app before we leave. If the doorbell transformer is too weak for the new unit, our licensed electricians replace it so the doorbell runs reliably through a cold Roscoe winter.
